Update: ‘Walking Dead’ Stuntman Has Died After Fall On Set, AMC Stops Production

Update 07/14/17: The Coweta County Coroner’s Office confirms to ET that “The Walking Dead” stuntman, John Bernecker, has passed away.

His date of death is July 12th, 18:30 (6:30pm). He succumbed to his injuries from a fall on set – cause of death is blunt force trauma.

He passed away at the Atlanta Medical Center. Bernecker was 33-years-old.

Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan on the hit AMC zombie series, tweeted out his condolences.

John Bernecker, a stuntman on “The Walking Dead”, was seriously injured on set Wednesday.

Deadline reported that Bernecker was medevaced to Atlanta Medical Center where he was in intensive care after a suffering a serious fall.

Bernecker reportedly fell 30 feet to a concrete floor and suffered a severe head injury.

His girlfriend, Jennifer Cocker, wrote on Facebook, “John deserves to be seen by every neurosurgeon and doctor there is until one of them sees the life we all know he has in him and bring him back to us… THIS ISNT FAIR.”

According to IMDb Bernecker has worked as a stuntman in Hollywood since 2009, performing stunts in films like “Battleship”, “The Hunger Games” series, “Get Out”, “The Fate of the Furious”, and the upcoming “Black Panther”.

Following Bernecker’s injury, AMC has temporarily stopped production of the series until otherwise. AMC released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter regarding the stuntman’s on-set injury. According to the network, Bernecker was taken immediately to the Atlanta hospital:

“We are saddened to report that John Bernecker, a talented stuntman for ‘The Walking Dead’ and numerous other television shows and films, suffered serious injuries from a tragic accident on set. He was immediately transported to an Atlanta hospital and we have temporarily shut down production. We are keeping John and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”

A spokesperson for SAG-AFTRA, which represents stunt performers and coordinators, said it has been informed of the injury and is investigating the situation. “As always, the safety and security of our members and others on set is of crucial concern to us and we are focused on this in our investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the performer and his family,” SAG-AFTRA said in the statement.
