One of the most anticipated movies in recent years is “A Wrinkle in Time”, Disney’s upcoming adaptation of the classic 1963 children’s book, helmed by director Ava DuVernay.
Featuring an A-list cast including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Zach Galifianakis and Mindy Kaling, the storyline surrounds a young girl (Storm Reid) whose scientist father (Chris Pine) has been missing after mysteriously disappearing years earlier, with Disney’s synopsis describing the film as “an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and ultimately, the triumph of love.”
As The Hollywood Reporter reports, director DuVernay and the “Wrinkle in Time” cast appeared on Saturday at Disney’s D23 expo to debut the first trailer for the film.
“I saw myself in it, and I saw so many different kinds of people in it,” Duvernay said at D23. “A family story wrapped in an epic adventure where you see worlds you’ve never seen before.”
As for the film’s diverse cast, DuVernay told the assemblage of fans that she wanted the cast the film with people “that looked like you, that looked like the real world.”
Witherspoon also spoke to the audience, revealing she was a big fan of the book when she was a girl.
“I just thought it was so magical that Ava chose to put her beautiful direction toward this material,” said Witherspoon. “She sees the whole world and the beauty of the world.”
Also on hand was Oprah Winfrey, who reportedly got big laughs when she quipped: “When Ava told me it is a character who is one of the wisest women in the universe, who wouldn’t say yes to that?”
In addition to unveiling the trailer, fans also got their first glimpse of the film’s poster.
Copies of the poster were presented to the crowd as Winfrey parodied her famed talk-show giveaways by yelling: “Everybody gets a poster! And you get a poster! And you get a poster!”
“A Wrinkle in Time” is scheduled to hit theatres on March 9, 2018.
