A photo taken outside Taylor Swift’s NYC apartment, allegedly of Taylor Swift’s bodyguards loading a large suitcase into an SUV, raised eyebrows and created headlines with its claim that Swift herself was actually hidden inside that suitcase.
The caption of the photo from the Splash News agency claimed that Swift was being “transported in a huge suitcase from her Tribeca apartment into her truck, in the trunk.”
The story was quickly picked up by numerous news outlets and became the subject of major mockery on social media. However, as many observers pointed out, the whole thing seemed too ridiculous to be true — because apparently it isn’t.
As reported by SPIN, Splash News subsequently retracted the story. “I literally just put the phone down from someone on Taylor’s camp,” a Splash representative told SPIN on Monday. “We’re having to actually retract that.”
In fact, the new caption for the photos reads: “Taylor Swift’s security guards are seen moving a huge case into the truck of an awaiting SUV in NYC.”
According to the Splash News rep, the photog who shot the pics is “not really a regular photographer that we use,” and made the claim about Swift being inside the suitcase without any evidence that she actually was. “The report stated it as a fact, which we actually don’t know,” added the rep. “How could we?”
Whether Swift did indeed feel the need to hide by squeezing herself into a piece of luggage may never truly be known; however, in the Twitterverse it was fun while it lasted:
