For the 45th edition of the famous Pirelli Calendar, an all-black cast have united for an extraordinary spin on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice In Wonderland”.
RuPaul, Whoopi Goldberg, Lupita Nyong’o, Sean Combs, Naomi Campbell and many more feature in the 2018 calendar.
For the shoot, RuPaul stars as the iconic Queen of Hearts. Goldberg takes on the role of The Royal Duchess. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is The Dormouse. Lil Yachty appears as The Queen’s Guard and South Sudanese-Australian model Duckie Thot takes on the title role of Alice.
Shot by famed photographer Tim Walker and styled by Edward Enninful, the inclusive and diverse spin on the fairy tale is monumental.
“This calendar is gonna be a historic calendar,” Campbell says, who took on the role of The Royal Beheader for the shoot. “It’s gonna go down in the history of Pirelli. It couldn’t be more balanced and diverse, which is something we all strive for each day. And Tim, we love you, you’re a hero and this is gonna be the best calendar ever.”
Model Adwoa Aboah, who stars as Tweedledee in the shoot, echoes Campbell’s statement. “I’d heard about what the concept was, you know, being an all-black cast, and it including such an amazing group of both established and emerging talent. I’d seen so many other Pirelli calendars but this time, because it was Tim, I said yes.”
For model Thando Hopa, this calendar will help provide children an inclusive group of role models. “When I was young, I didn’t have a single role model who looked like me, who could have been a source of inspiration or motivation,” Hopa says. “Any girl, whether she is black, or Chinese, or Indian, they should be able to have their own fairy tale.”
