“I have been a concealed carry permit holder for awhile now after being robbed at gunpoint in 2014, and I take gun safety very seriously. While in-between tour dates last week, I went to go target shooting with a friend a few days before an early flight out of my hometown Raleigh-Durham airport,” reads his statement.
“American Idol” Season Ten winner Scott McCreery was cited last week for carrying a loaded handgun through an airport checkpoint.
McCreery was traveling through Raleigh-Durham International Airport when he was stopped with a loaded 9mm Smith and Wesson handgun in his backpack.
The News and Observer reports the singer had recently been at a firing range, and had forgotten to remove the gun from his backpack before going through airport security.
Despite having a conceal carry permit, McCreery was cited for a misdemeanour violation for attempting to bring a loaded weapon through security and onboard an aircraft.
In 2014, McCreery was on the other side of a gun when during a home invasion. That incident put him on a “higher level of alert,” he said. “My bus would not be the bus to rob,” he joked. “I’ve got guys that are always equipped to make stuff happen. And one of the guys is like a black belt in every martial arts you can think of.”
TSA officials did not provide any official comment on the airport incident.
Following the incident, McCreery explains that after being robbed at gunpoint in 2014 he takes gun safety “very seriously,” and has released a statement to People.
