Brooklyn Beckham, the eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham at 18, plans to “disappear” to New York City to escape the spotlight that’s been thrust upon him since his birth.
An avid photographer, who just released his first book of personal photographs, plans to move to the Big Apple this summer to study photography after earning a scholarship to a prestigious arts university. It will be the first time he’s left the family nest, causing some feelings of nervous excitement in him.
“I’m nervous about moving away from my family, that’s one thing that I’m really scared of, but I feel like it’ll be good for me to live on my own for a bit and really knuckle down on what I really love and study,” he tells TooFab. The eldest of four siblings, Beckham says he has the blessing of his famous mom and dad to pursue his passion, adding it was Victoria’s idea for him to study in New York. “They’re so supportive,” he says. “My mum and dad really helped me as well with this book so I couldn’t have done it without them.”
While Beckham may be able to escape the spotlight with his move, he can’t escape his parents’ star status.
“People are always going to know me as Victoria and David Beckham’s son, and people thought that [I’ve succeeded] because of my parents—and part of it maybe, yeah, of course, it does help, but I’m just trying to make my own way,” he explains to W magazine. “That’s why I’m moving to New York now—I’m trying to make a name for myself, and just really start my photography career and live as a student, which will be cool and I’m excited about.”
