Since Dame Helen Mirren won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2006 for playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, she’s turned into one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.
And what has Helen been doing for the past six years? She’s starred in 11 films, earned another Oscar nomination and even made it on Esquire’s Sexiest Women Alive list! Critics are saying that nothing compares to her most recent role as Alma Reville, Alfred Hitchcock’s wife and confidant in Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock, a role that could possibly land her yet another Oscar nomination in the new year.
ET Canada’s Matte Babel sat down with the 67-year-old actress to talk about finally getting some on screen time with Sir Anthony Hopkins and her real life meeting with the infamous director.
“I met him a really long time ago, he did a film in London called Frenzy, and I was a really young inexperienced actress and I was sent to meet with him,” Helen reveals. “I didn’t really want to go, because I didn’t really want to be in his movie… I was ignorant and prejudiced and I didn’t remotely appreciate what a great filmmaker he was.”;
And having met the man behind the madness, Helen tells us what she thinks about Sir Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of the great director: “I met Hitchcock very late, much later than this… he was drinking a lot more he was a lot fatter… and he was a lot older.”; The actress goes on to say, “Working with Tony, I just came to completely accept that person as Hitchcock.”;
