When Meg Ryan took the stage Sunday night to introduce the “She Loves Me”; cast ahead of their performance at the 70th annual Tony Awards, it was the actress’ appearance that stole the spotlight after a scathing social media assault.

The Broadway musical, starring Laura Benanti, Zachary Levi and Jane Krakowski, is actually the inspiration behind Ryan’s most recent hit romcom “You’ve Got Mail”;, but Twitter trolls probably missed that fun fact because they were too busy commenting on the star’s face.

Having a field day with Ryan’s appearance, fans took to social media with a plethora of unflattering comparisons and memes quickly turning a rare appearance by America’s sweetheart into a plastic surgery witch-hunt.

With headlines about her face trending on Facebook Monday morning, Ryan became the talk of the Tonys, but not for a positive reason. Thankfully fans of the 54-year-old actress came to her defence, tweeting responses that attacked trolls’ unfair standards of beauty:

Fans also called them out for seemingly not realizing there are more important conversations to be had regarding recent events:

A topic not lost on Ryan herself, the actress told Porter magazine back in December 2015 why she finally feels “easy”; with the way things are in her life:  “We get stuck in these conversations about looks and hair colour and our roots. It’s interesting and funny for five minutes, but it’s not that interesting.”;

Adding, “There’s a lot of hatred in the world today, it’s so easy to judge,”; she says. “Imagine being a hater, how stupid!”;
