Every once in a while a new creation comes along that changes the culinary world. Today was not that day.

This morning our very own Rick Campanelli participated in a media challenge to promote the upcoming premiere of Chopped Canada on Food Network. If you’re familiar with the concept of the show you know that competing chefs are given secret ingredients for which they have a limited time to turn into some sort of delicious culinary creation.  Today’s challenge saw Rick and other members of the media given 30 minutes to turn a basket full of unknown ingredients into a tasty appetizer that a panel of Canadian chefs including Chuck Hughes, Susur Lee, Roger Mooking and Lynn Crawford would judge.  With adrenaline running high and tension so thick you could cut it with a knife, Rick and his partner, KISS 92.5 producer, Maurie Sherman, opened their basket to find the following mystery ingredients: Grapefruit, beef tenderloin, carrots, Canadian cheddar cheese and cake sprinkles. The boys had half an hour to make magic and could supplement their appetizer with ingredients in the Chopped kitchen.

Rick and Maurie put their heads together and came up with their signature dish dubbed, Hawaiian Sunrise and to say it blew the judges away would be, well, it would be a lie.

Chef Lynn Crawford declared that the creation “looks like a compost bin” while Chef Chuck Hughes begged that Rick and Maurie “not quit your day jobs. ” Chef Vikram Vij called the dish, “confusing” while Chef Roger Mooking was speechless, choosing instead to burst into laughter.

In addition to being stars in the kitchen, Rick and Maurie are also selfless, giving individuals who want you at home to be able to dazzle your guests the way they dazzled the judges today. So below is the recipe for Hawaiian Sunrise. Hopefully it’s not too complicated for our viewers to follow.
