2013: The year that Def Leppard and One Direction were found to be alarmingly similar to one another.

It sounds a bit odd to compare the two groups, but British tabloid Mirror UK ran a piece recently that said the 80s arena rockers were looking into legal action against the boy band. The story suggests that Def Lep found the One Direction song “Midnight Memories”; to be a bit too close to their hit “Pour Some Sugar On Me”;.

Def Leppard guitarists Phil Cohen and Vivian Campbell have promptly spoken up to deny claims that they are pursuing any such legal action.

“The chords are one-four-five,”;noted Campbell in an interview with Billboard. “Those are the blues. You don’t get more basic than that. I think what’s more reminiscent of the Leppard thing is the production, the sound, the vocals, the reverb and the way it’s assembled.”;

The Def Leppard axemen declare the 1D track to be “very similar in structure”; but not a rip-off in any real capacity.

The veteran rockers did speak out about one song they felt borrowed a bit too heavily from another artist. Phil Cohen agrees with the argument that Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”; is largely a repackaged knock-off of Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up.”;

“That’s different,”; says Cohen. “In fact it’s got the mayonnaise jar and people hooting in the background which Marvin Gaye had. I don’t see that you can do that.”;

Do you think One Direction’s “Midnight Memories”; borrows a bit too liberally from Def Leppard’s classic rock staple? We have the two clips below for your audio evaluating pleasure. Let us know what you think in the comments.
