One of the biggest box office draws of both 2012 and 2013, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey seems to have been equally popular among those who were unwilling to legally pay for it.
According to TorrentFreak.com, Peter Jackson’s three-hour-long epic was illegally downloaded 8.4 million times, making it the most pirated movie of last year. Django Unchained and Fast and Furious 6 were extremely popular with pirates—the former was illegally downloaded 8.1 million times, the latter 7.9 million.
Unexpectedly, the Ryan Gosling vehicle Gangster Squad, one of the year’s biggest box office busts, was illegally downloaded more than Man of Steel and Despicable Me 2, two of the year’s biggest releases. Even more unexpectedly, neither Steel or Despicable managed to crack the top 10 list.
