Game of Thrones viewers know actor Jack Gleeson as creepy, sadistic young King Joffrey, but he proved to be very un-Joffrey-like during a recent visit to Oxford University, where he spoke to the university’s prestigious debating society, the Oxford Union.

Gleeson’s talk was titled “I Hate Celebrity Culture,”; and video of the event is going viral. In what’s being described as Gleeson’s “epic rant”; on the “religious hysteria”; of  celebrity obsession, he rails against the current focus on celebrities, which he sees as deeply damaging to society — and does not shy away from the fact that he’s a celebrity himself.

“What’s ironic is that you see celebrities endorsing things like musical tampons, and appearing in advertisements for lavender scented teeth whiteners or something,”; Gleeson says. “Wielding goods whose sell-by dates will, ironically, outlast theirs.”;
