Russell Johnson, most known for portraying the Professor on “Gilligan’s Island’, has died. He was 89.
A representative confirmed the beloved TV actor died of natural causes at his home in Washington state.
Though Johnson will forever be associated with the popular 1964-67 sitcom in which a motley group embarks on a three-hour tour, only to remain shipwrecked for the run of the series, his accomplishments go beyond the small screen. Johnson joined the Air Force, subsequently flying in combat missions in World War II, and receiving the Purple Heart after a mission saw his plane shot down, stranding the pilot in the Philippines with two broken ankles.
Johnson leaves behind Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) and Tina Louise (Ginger) as the show’s surviving castmembers. Said Wells, “Russell was 100% a gentleman. A genuine, dear, wonderful man.”;
