When NBC’s TV reboot of Nick Hornby’s bestseller About a Boy debuts next month, the show will get a boost thanks to a special crossover episode with another NBC show, acclaimed ensemble drama Parenthood.

The announcement was made Sunday during the Television Critics Association press tour session for About a Boy, which focuses on an irresponsible guy (David Walton) who befriends an 11-year-old boy (Benjamin Stockham) and his quirky single mother (Minnie Driver). About a Boy was successfully adapted into a critically acclaimed 2002 film starring Hugh Grant and Toni Collette.

Sharp-eyed viewers may have noticed that Walton’s character, songwriter Will Freeman, recently appeared on Parenthood during a poker game with Crosby Braverman (Dax Shepard).

“I think just because both shows are set in San Francisco and the Bay Area, it sort of made sense,”; says Jason Katims, executive producer of both About a Boy and Parenthood. “Because Will is in the world of music and Crosby’s in the world of music, it made sense to me, and so that’s why we did the thing of Will being in the poker game.”;

A crossover will occur, explains Katims, when Will hosts his own poker game. “And so Dax Shepard will be making an appearance as Crosby Braverman on About a Boy as well.”;
