Gorgeous on the cover of New York Magazine in a red and white printed Stella McCartney frock, Lupita Nyong’o opens up about her first role, adjusting to life in America and what she foresees for herself post-awards season.
The 12 Years A Slave star, who’s already conquered awards season with her various fashion choices, opened up about adjusting to life in the United States. “I thrive on structure. I find my freedom in structure,”; the actress says.
“It was very hard to adjust to an individualistic and very liberal system. I mean, my upbringing, I would iron my clothes every night. I would plan what I wore the night before, and then I would iron it. That’s just the way my mom raised us. Then I got to Hampshire, where clothing is sometimes optional and all this kind of thing. I was mortified,” she says of her time at Yale School of Drama.
It looks like her upbringing wasn’t for naught. Lupita has quickly become the fashion world’s “it girl”; not only ruling the red carpets, but also starring in Miu Miu’s latest ad campaign. Even with her stylish accolades accumulating, the actress says she’s still not used to being recognized from her award-winning role. “I’ve been in a bubble,”; she tells the magazine. “I haven’t been out much, I haven’t gotten used to being recognized. I was blissfully ignorant of the magnitude of the project I was in or what it was going to mean for the world.”;
Proving that she might have always been a risk-taker when it comes to the fashion scene, Lupita looks back on her role in Oliver Twist for her school play. “I was a passerby, I had five words: “coming down the street, there’,”; she shares. “That was it. But I had a back-story for my character,”; she adds. “I decided I was going to be a man, so I borrowed my brother’s suit, my dad’s briefcase. I don’t know why I decided to be a man – I think it was more interesting.”;
