Isn’t She A Doll? Barbie Backlash Over Sports Illustrated Cover

The latest cover star of Sports Illustrated has an impeccable figure, bright blue eyes and luscious long blonde hair.

Wearing her iconic black and white striped swimsuit, Barbie’s sexy magazine cover is causing quite a stir.

Mattel’s newest marketing campaign puts the iconic Barbie doll on the cover of the magazine, with a four-page photo and advertising feature inside to promote the limited edition “Sports Illustrated Barbie” to be sold exclusively at Target.com.

The actual swimsuit cover features supermodels Nina Agdal, Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen, but the Barbie cover will be wrapped around 1,000 issues.

The brand is targeting an adult audience, but is being criticized for sending the wrong message to young girls. Barbie has been scrutinized in the past for having an unrealistic body image, but the brand is encouraging empowerment, even taking to Twitter using the hashtag #unapologetic.

The Sports Illustrated 50th anniversary swimsuit issue hits newsstands on February 18.
