If 2013 was the year of the duelling “Die Hard in the White House”; movies (Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down hit theatres within three months of each other) and 2012 was the year of the duelling Snow White epics (Snow White and the Huntsmen and Mirror Mirror were released within two months of each other), 2014 is shaping up to be the year of the duelling terminal illness-themed coming of age stories.
First up is The Fault of Our Stars, with Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort playing teen cancer patients who fall in love. (You can view the enormously depressing-looking trailer here).
After that, we’ll have Sequoia, which stars Aly Michalka as a young woman with a stage 3 tumour who travels to Sequoia National Park to overdose on anti-depressants and Dustin Milligan as the young man she meets on the bus ride over. Both actors shot to fame with teen roles – Michalka on Disney channel’s Phil of the Future and Milligan on the 90210 reboot.
Sequoia debuts at SXSW 2014 on March 9.
