Hard to believe it’s been nearly 25 years since Pretty Woman turned Julia Roberts into a bona fide superstar. Plus, it was no slouch for Richard Gere’s then-struggling career, either. And now the iconic film is making a much-deserved reappearance: this time as a musical.
That’s right: the story of the rich businessman and the beautiful hooker with a heart of gold is being developed for the Broadway stage. And although Richard and Julia won’t be reprising their roles, the film’s director, Garry Marshall, is on board to write the musical’s book. Oh, and so is original screenwriter JF Lawton.
Joining Garry and JF on the music front? Well, several New York composers and lyricists are now being considered for the plum gig.
Although still its infancy, the project may be the closest thing to a guaranteed slam dunk you can get in the cutthroat world of Broadway musicals. And hey, even if critics aren’t kind, there’s plenty of money to be had: just ask the producers of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark.
