The first Peanuts comic strip appeared on Oct. 5, 1950. Drawn with a simplicity and elegance that was groundbreaking for its time, the four panel strip featured Charlie Brown walking past two other children who comment, “Well! Here comes “ol Charlie Brown! Good ol’ Charlie Brown…yes sir! Good ol’ Charlie Brown!”; Once Charlie Brown is out of ear-shot, one of them says, “How I hate him!”; The strip would go on to become the most popular and most acclaimed comic strip of all time.
Sixty five years later, Peanuts is set to hit the multiplex. Unlike the original comic strip, the movie will be in colour and in 3D. But if the new teaser is anything to go by, it looks like the movie will otherwise stay true to Charles Schulz’s vision. Charlie Brown and Snoopy are drawn in a way that couldn’t be further from the photo-realistic CGI of most of today’s animated productions, and the animators seem to have retained Charles Schulz’s approach to backgrounds (i.e. there are hardly any).
Another indication that the movie will be worth watching: It’s produced by Paul Feig, whose Bridesmaids and The Heat stand as two of the better comedies of the last couple of years.
Peanuts hits theatres on November 6, 2015.
