After nine seasons of surprise slaps, Barney’s legendary catchphrases and endless sips of Glen McKenna scotch, How I Met Your Mother ended last night with a finale that found Ted (Josh Radnor and, as an older guy, the disembodied voice of Bob Saget) finally concluding the story he starting telling his kids back in the series pilot.

Among the revelations: Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) had a third child, and Marshall becomes a Supreme Court Justice; Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) eventually get divorced, but Barney later becomes a father after bedding 31 women in 31 days, and impregnating a woman known as “Number 31.”;

Meanwhile, we finally learned the name of the Mother (Cristin Milioti): Tracy. After viewing a montage of Tracy and Ted’s life together, we find out Tracy ultimately gets sick and, as many had predicted, has passed away by the time Ted is telling his story.

THE “HIMYM’ CAST ON THE SERIES FINALE

Ted’s kids, however, are clearly smarter than he is, and surmise that the reason he told them the long-winded story was that he wanted their blessing to ask out Aunt Robin — which he does, thus bringing the show full circle by completing the story that began with Ted meeting Robin in the first episode.

Stars Josh Radnor and Neil Patrick Harris took to Twitter to discuss the finale, and Josh was clearly getting sentimental:

NPH, on the other hand, gave out “the highest of fives”; to everyone who enjoyed watching the show for all these yeas:

Meanwhile, Robin herself, Cobie Smulders, appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman last night, and revealed that HIMYM creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays had the series’ ending planned out right from the pilot. “It’s kind of amazing that it’s been nine years and it’s come full circle.”;

So what did you think of How I Met Your Mother“s final episode? Did it hit all the right notes, or were you disappointed with the way it ended?
