Tom Hardy is a bit of a mystery. In a good way that is. The UK actor — best known for his turn as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises — tends to avoid the Hollywood limelight. Which makes his cover story in May’s issue of Esquire all the more fantastic. Some highlights:

Sure, there are few gents out there more badass than Bane, but Tom doesn’t see himself in that light. “I don’t feel very manly,”; he admits. “I don’t feel rugged and strong and capable in real life, not how I imagine a man ought to be. I’m not a fighter. I’m a petite little bourgeois boy from London. I don’t fight, I mimic.”;

Tom also has a few things to say about his rumoured feud with Charlize Theron (word is they didn’t get along while filming the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road). “That’s disappointing. I think she’s f**king awesome. I think she’s incredible. I think she’s one of the most talented actresses of our generation.”;

More than anything, Tom seems full of gratitude for where he is, both personally and professionally. “I was a shameful suburban statistic,”; he says of his past alcohol and drug addictions. “I was told very clearly, “You go down that road, Tom, you won’t come back. That’s it. All you need to know.’ And that message stayed with me very clearly for the rest of my days.”;
