Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’s brother Mark Shand passed away in hospital on Wednesday after he was injured in a fall. The 62-year-old travel writer and conservationist was in New York hosting a charity auction for Elephant Family, a charity he founded which fights to prevent the extinction of the endangered Asian elephant.

After the event, Shand attended an after-party where it’s believed he went outside to have a cigarette.  He was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after he fell outside the venue near Times Square.

A representative from Clarence House released this statement on behalf of The Royals: “The Duchess, The Prince of Wales and all her family members are utterly devastated by this sudden and tragic loss.  Mark Shand was a man of extraordinary vitality, a tireless campaigner and conservationist whose incredible work through The Elephant Family and beyond remained his focus right up until his death.”;
