J.K. Rowling’s ‘Casual Vacancy’ Coming To HBO

By Brent Furdyk.

There are no wizards or dragons in J.K. Rowling’s follow-up to her Harry Potter books, but that didn’t stop The Casual Vacancy from topping the bestseller lists. Next stop: HBO, where the political (and decidedly non-magical) novel will become a three-hour miniseries.

A co-production between HBO and BBC, the miniseries will be written by EastEnders scribe Sarah Phelps and directed by Jonny Campbell (In the Flesh).

The Casual Vacancy is set in a British suburb, where the death of a beloved local politician results in an uproar as various factions form to fill the vacant council seat.

“We are thrilled to bring J.K. Rowling’s extraordinary tapestry of modern Britain to the screen,” said Ben Stephenson, the controller of BBC drama, in a statement. “It’s a book of such richness that through humour, social commentary and above all fantastic characters, that says something insightful and entertaining about the country we live in.”
