UPDATE: As you might imagine, Morrissey wasn’t exactly tickled pink with the response he received from the office of Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.
The Pope of Mope has been embroiled in a barb-filled war of words with a spokesperson representing National Fisheries Minister Gail Shea. The spokesperson (Sophie Doucet) slammed Moz’s views on the seal hunt and has now received a response from the “Hairdresser on Fire”; singer.
“There was something more than slightly desperate in Gail Shea referring to my recent comments on the annual Canadian seal slaughter as “ignorant”, as reported in Canada’s National Post,”; wrote Morrissey in a post on True To You. “Speaking on behalf of Gail Shea, Sophie Doucet – showing symptoms of the same Shea disorder – stated: “I would urge Mr. Morrissey to consider the impact that his ignorant and inflammatory statements have on the livelihoods of thousands of hard-working men and women in rural communities”. I should remind Sophie Doucet that building and maintaining the Concentration Camps of Auschwitz also provided livelihoods, but this hardly made the Camps warranted. Let it also be added that the vast financial benefits of the seal slaughter are not directly intended for those hard-working men and women in rural communities, who, in fact, are merely used by the Fisheries Minister to do the messy task of searing flesh.”;
Well, there goes all hope of a national Morrissey/Gail Shea stadium tour.
In what’s shaping up to be 2014’s premier music feud, Morrissey and Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans are butting heads over the seal hunt.
Earlier in the week, Morrissey penned an essay slamming Canada’s annual seal hunt and called out National Fisheries Minister Gail Shea. The ex-Smiths frontman remarked that Canada was “fashionably dead,”; although he did so while emphasizing that Canada was filled with good people and that it was the policies he took issue with.
“Internationally, Canada’s sorry image is due entirely to its seal slaughter – which is greedy and barbaric, and it is dismaying to witness such ignorance in 2014,”; wrote Moz.
The office of the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans responded with a blast of their own, declaring Morrissey to be “ignorant.”;
“This is clearly just another case of a millionaire celebrity, desperate for a hobby, shamelessly regurgitating misinformation and myths that fringe animal-rights groups have been pushing for years,”; said Shea’s spokesperson Sophie Doucet. “In the future, I would urge Mr. Morrissey to consider the impact that his ignorant and inflammatory statements have on the livelihoods of thousands of hard-working men and women in rural communities.”;
We can’t imagine this beef will get resolved anytime soon. Heck, there’s probably a better chance of Morrissey eating beef than this thing ending with rainbows and sunshine.
