Last month’s series finale of How I Met Your Mother freaked out a lot of the show’s fans when it was revealed (spoiler coming) that the Mother had been dead the entire time Ted Mosby told his nine-season story.

“Some people just hated it,”; admitted star Neil Patrick Harris during last night’s appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman. “[They] hated the ending, were very upset by it, and I think that’s a compliment to the show in a weird way because it means that they have grown up with these characters and feel like they want it to go a certain way.”;

Noting that HIMYM balanced “funny-funny and really serious,”; NPH added, “I think it was a nice, reflective, sad but a happy ending to a long, long story… I’m very proud of our show, that it went beyond the sitcom conceit and told a bitter, better story.”;

Neil is currently earning rave reviews for his Broadway performance as a transgender German rock star in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
