George Clooney has dated many a lovely woman over the years. Hey, when you’re a rich, handsome, charming matinee idol, that’s kind of par for the course. But this time around, the 52-year-old actor seems to be shaking things up a bit.

Say hello to Amal Alamuddin, the woman popping up with George Clooney on various vacations around the world.  She’s different from the others! By quite a margin, too. Sure, Amal’s beautiful — this much we expect. But that’s where any similarities end. Some tidbits:

She’s wicked smart: Not only is Amal Oxford educated, the 36-year-old is fluent in French and Arabic.

She’s a high-profile lawyer: Amal is an NYU School of Law graduate, specializing in international law, human rights, extradition, and criminal law. While at NYC, she also worked as a student law clerk for the current Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was, at that time, a judge at the U.S. Court of Appeals For the Second Circuit.  After graduating, Alamuddin joing the litigation department of New York law firm Sullivan & Cromwell and now currently works for the Doughty Street firm in England.  She is the legal adviser to the King of Bahrain and in 2011 she began representing controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

She’s an author: Amal is co-editor of The Law and Practice of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (Oxford University Press). She’s also penned several articles and book chapters on international criminal law.

She’s an award winner: While studying at NYU, Alamuddin was honoured with the Jack J. Katz Memorial Award, for demonstrating the highest excellence in the field of entertainment law.

To conclude: not exactly the typical Clooney companion. Refreshing indeed!
