Lena Dunham is appalled by the new music video for Kanye West’s “Famous”, comparing it to the Stanford rape case and the sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby.
Dunham criticized the music video, which depicts dozens of celebrities including Taylor Swift and Rihanna as nude wax figures, on Facebook: “At the same time Brock Turner is getting off with a light tap for raping an unconscious woman and photographing her breasts for a group chat… As assaults are Periscoped across the web and girls commit suicide after being exposed in ways they never imagined.”

She did not hold back on the Cosby comparisons either: “While Bill Cosby‘s crimes are still being uncovered and understood as traumas for the women he assaulted but also massive bruises to our national consciousness… Now I have to see the prone, unconscious, waxy bodies of famous women, twisted like they’ve been drugged and chucked aside at a rager?”, before adding “It gives me such a sickening sense of dis-ease.”
Kanye West released the music video on Friday, which also featured men including: Donald Trump, George W. Bush, Chris Brown and West himself.
West made headlines when he first released the song, referring to Taylor Swift as “that b**ch”. Turns out Dunham is not too happy about it: “Seeing a woman I love like Taylor Swift (f**k that one hurt to look at, I couldn’t look), a woman I admire like Rihanna or Anna (Wintour), reduced to a pair of waxy breasts made by some special effects guy in the Valley, it makes me feel sad and unsafe and worried for the teenage girls who watch this and may not understand that grainy roving camera as the stuff of snuff films.”

And while some may argue in favour of West’s artistic expression, the “Girls” star believes there is nothing artsy about it: “The ‘Famous’ video is one of the more disturbing ‘artistic’ efforts in recent memory.”
Of the 11 celebrities featured in the video, not including Yeezy, only one has responded to his/her depiction. Chris Brown wrote a post on Instagram suggesting that the notorious rapper may have a few loose screws: “Why I gotta have the plumbers butt/ crack showing WAX figure?” he wrote, adding “KANYE CRAZY, talented, but crazy.”
