Add James Cameron to the list of people who were less than thrilled with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

The Canadian filmmaker suggests that director J.J. Abrams did not do enough to make a lasting impression on the “Star Wars” universe.

In a video that has surfaced on YouTube, Cameron says the original saga had more innovation: “I have to say that I felt that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination. This film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.”

Cameron does insist, however, he admires a lot of what Abrams does: “I don’t want to say too much about the film, because I also have a lot of respect for J.J. Abrams.”

The comments tiptoe around his thoughts on both the new movie and the original saga. Cameron calls the prequels “visually innovative” but does not necessarily say they are good. In the same vein, he points out problems with “The Force Awakens” without actually calling it a bad movie.

Regardless, Cameron says he is interested to see where they take the saga next.
