Chris Evans has taken to Twitter on Monday to announce he’ll be stepping down as host of “Top Gear” after one season.
The news comes only hours after it was revealed he’ll be investigated over allegations of sexual assault dating back to the 1990s, the Daily Mail report.
‘Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that’s not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best,” he tweeted on Monday. “Full steam ahead then with Radio 2, CarFest, Children In Need, 500 Words and whatever else we can dream up in the future.”
Hours earlier, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that a woman had come forward with a “non-recent sexual assault.”

The last season of “Top Gear” finished with its lowest ratings since 2012.
Evans took on the role after Jeremy Clarkson was fired last year, and reports of tension between him and his new co-presenter Matt LeBlanc have plagued the revamped series ever since the former “Friends” star boarded the series.
Last month, reports claimed that LeBlanc threatened to quit if Evans did not exit the show.
Evans had signed on with the BBC for a three-year contract and will only receive one-third of the negotiated payment, with no payoff being offered by the British network.
