As the backlash against The Tenors’ Remigio Pereira continues following his alteration of “O Canada” at Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game, another high-profile Canadian is piping up to voice his displeasure.
Legendary sports broadcaster Don Cherry shared his thoughts on the performance Wednesday on Twitter, calling the politically-charged tweak “sad.”
“I told my buddies, ‘boy don’t they look good in their suits and ties, they will make us proud,'” Cherry, 82, writes, “And then one of them did his thing with our anthem. Can you imagine what the Americans think of us now?”
In addition to pointing out the Boston native’s American roots – “It’s sad, it was only one, and it was done by an American” – Cherry seems to attribute the stunt to liberal motives. “Oh well, all the left wing weirdos in this country are happy,” he says.
Meanwhile, Christine Michaud, Spokesperson for the Office of the Honourable Minister of Canadian Heritage, Melanie Joly, gave the following statement to Global News: “The national anthem is a treasured Canadian symbol. Mr. Pereira’s change to the national anthem to further his political views is inappropriate and disrespectful.”

Following the performance, wherein Pereira held a sign in support of the controversial #AllLivesMatter hashtag and altered the lyrics of the national anthem, the group apologized for the switch on Twitter, denouncing it as the act of a “lone wolf,” and announcing that Pereira “will not be performing with The Tenors until further notice.”
