Julie Andrews Reacts To The Death Of ‘Princess Diaries’ Director Garry Marshall: ‘I Am Devastated’

Beloved director and writer Garry Marshall is leaving behind quite the legacy. After the news broke late Tuesday that Marshall had passed at the age of 81, stars he’s worked with throughout his seven-decade career spoke out in his honour.

Julie Andrews, who starred in Marshall’s 2001 and 2004 hits, “The Princess Diaries” and “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”, released a statement to ET shortly after the director’s death.

“I am devastated to hear of Garry’s passing. He was a dear friend and colleague….generous to a fault,” she said. “My heart goes out to [his wife] Barbara and the entire family. We shall miss him.”

Andrews’ “Diaries” co-star, Hector Elizondo, who worked on several projects with Marshall, also spoke to ET about the loss on Tuesday.

“He was a kind man, an elegant man, and a loyal, loyal man,” Elizondo said. “He just elevated the atmosphere he was in. He mentored so many people. He loved seeing character in people. He used to say, ‘Everybody has talent, Hector! Everybody has talent but it’s the character that makes the difference!'”

Elizondo briefly commented on the possibility of a “Princess Diaries 3”, which both Anne Hathaway and Marshall had regularly discussed.

“[Anne] was talking to Garry about doing a “Princess Diaries 3”. He was looking forward to being involved in that one way or another,” Elizondo said. “He had another movie, our eighteenth. He said Hector we’re gonna do our 18th.”
