Fans may be clamouring for Idris Elba to step into James Bond’s martini-drinking shoes, but the actor has other ideas.

“If I’m really honest, man, I think I’m too old for that,” Elba tells “Good Morning America” with a laugh. “I can’t be running around in cars and ladies and martinis – who wants to do that? It sounds terrible!”

Host Michael Strahan asks the 43-year-old actor about the fan-driven campaign to get him to play 007, with Elba calling it the “wildest rumour in the world.”

If fans do get their way, Elba wouldn’t be the oldest actor to play Bond on the big screen. Roger Moore is the oldest actor to portray the super-spy, making his Bond debut in 1973 at age 45.

The British actor has long been a fan favourite for Bond since Daniel Craig announced he wouldn’t return to the iconic role for any future installments. Back in 2014, Elba said he would “absolutely” step into the role should it ever be offered to him. For now, it’s all wishful thinking.

“If it were to happen, it would be the will of a nation, because there’s not been talks of me in the studios about any of that,” Elba tells Strahan. “But everywhere I go, people want that to happen.”

In the meantime, fans can get their fill of Elba on the big screen in “Star Trek: Beyond”, in theatres this week.
