Zoe Saldana is opening up this week about a rare condition that she shares with her mother and sister as she kicks some serious butt on the cover of Net-a-Porter’s latest The EDIT issue.
Sitting down with the online shop and magazine, the “Star Trek Beyond” actress has revealed that she suffers from the energy-sapping autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. “Your body doesn’t have the energy it needs to filter toxins, causing it to believe that it has an infection, so it’s always inflamed,” the star said. “You create antibodies that attack your glands, so you have to eat clean.”

To cope with both the debilitating effects of the disease and her non-stop schedule of filming and promotion, the actress and her husband Marco Perego have adopted a gluten- and dairy-free diet.
“I had a great time in my 20s. Then your doctor says you’re losing calcium in your bones. What the f*** is that?! I would hear those conversations with my mom and grandma, thinking I’d never get there,” Saldana remembered. “’I’m going to live forever!'”
“But all of a sudden it hits you,” she continued. “I s*** you not, it’s from night to day.”
