As gay women, Tegan and Sara firmly in support of gay marriage — but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re actually all that enthused about marriage as an institution.

Directed by Clea DuVall (a.k.a Secret Service agent Marjorie on “Veep”) , the “BWU” video explores this dichotomy with proposals involving an empty ring box.

“I liked the idea of having no one really understand how lonely it can be when you have different ideas about what you want your life to be,” DuVall tells Entertainment Weekly. “I think [the message] is something that you don’t often hear in pop. There’s this expectation of love and relationships and what ‘true love’ is supposed to look like, and anything short of that is a failure or not ‘true love.'” Watch:
