Jim Carrey did not disappoint his recent audience of graduates at the Maharishi University of Management graduation in Fairfield, Iowa over the weekend.
“I want to thank the trustees, the administrators, the faculty of MUM for creating an institution worthy of Maharishi’s ideals of education, as well as enabling the students through transcendental education and vedic knowledge to slack off twice a day for an hour and a half,”; Carrey joked.
Although the commencement speech kept the audience laughing throughout, the Dumb and Dumber To actor certainly did not leave out special words of wisdom for the class of 2014. “The decisions we make in this moment are based in either love or fear,”; he said.
After sharing his own personal life lessons, Carrey encouraged graduates to pursue their dreams because “you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love,”; he told the audience. This he learned from his father who chose a safe and steady career over his love of comedy.
“So many of us chose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect so we never ask the universe for it. I’m saying I’m the proof that you can ask the universe for it. And if it doesn’t happen for you right away, it’s only because the universe is so busy fulfilling my order,” Carrey continued.
The day was made even more special for Carrey when the university honoured the high school dropout with an honourary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts Honoris Caus.
