After a pair of high-profile box office disappointments (Transcendence, The Lone Ranger), Johnny Depp may soon be back on track.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms the 50-year-old actor is in negotiations to star in a biopic (well, kinda sorta) of legendary illusionist Harry Houdini. And believe it or not, the film — sporting the not-so-brief title The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero — has some real franchise potential.

You see, Houdini’s life will simply serve as a jumping-off point for an Indiana Jones-style adventure. The premise: although renowned for his escape artistry, the magician chooses to embrace a lesser-known side business: investigating the occult.

Lionsgate will produce The Secret Life of Houdini, with Dean Parisot (Red 2) on board to direct. Shooting is set to begin this November.

And if for some reason negotiations fall through, at least Johnny has a couple of surefire blockbusters coming down the pipe: Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Alice in Wonderland 2.
