At 68-years-old, Helen Mirren is still widely regarded as a sex symbol, a fact which the Calendar Girls star finds absolutely baffling. “Oh, they’re not thinking straight,”; she says of her admirers in the new issue of AARP. According to Mirren, what these people fail to recognize is that one’s sex appeal “becomes less relevant with age, which is a good thing. Everything changes as we get older, and we have to applaud that fact, don’t we?”;
Mirren’s husband, on the other hand, is not at all baffled by her enduring sex appeal. “It’s a function of her mind-set,”; says director Taylor Hackford, who met Mirren on the set of White Nights in 1984 and married her in 1997. “Helen has an innate sense of who she is, and a confidence and directness. She doesn’t play it safe. What’s sexy is how she is in the world even more than how she looks, though she certainly looks beautiful.”;
That confidence was on full display when Mirren accepted Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding award earlier this year and, during a game of charades, twerked in front of the auditorium full of students. “Oh, God, I thought that was going to be the end of me,”; she says looking back on the event.
Another reason for Mirren’s enduring sex appeal has to do with her choice of roles. In particular, her roles in Caligula, Excalibur, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover and Calendar Girls, none of which required much in the way of wardrobe. But while these movies remain fan favourites, Mirren isn’t quite as enthusiastic, admitting that she feels “vaguely embarrassed”; about all of the attention her nude scenes have received.
