UPDATE: Response to George R.R. Martin’s charity offer was overwhelming, with the two contest spots snatched up within hours. In fact, an additional eight people are now on a waiting list, each hoping for the opportunity to be “murdered’ in the author’s upcoming book.
One of the fans who put up $20,000 for the, uh, “honour,’ was Facebook employee Dave Goldblatt. “I’m fortunate enough to be in a position to do this cool thing, and it’s going toward a good cause,”; he says. “I don’t think I’m doing anything extraordinary.”;

Got an extra $20,000 kicking around? Then you could become part of the Game of Thrones saga — and, as a bonus, get to be brutally murdered!
That’s the offer coming from GoT author George R.R. Martin, who’s raising money for his favourite charities, the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot in New Mexico.
As The Daily Mail reports, Martin is embarking on a PBS-style pledge drive, offering an array of goodies for various levels of contributions.
Donations begin at the $10 “Ranger”; level, while a “Queen”; level donation of $4,500 will get you the script of the very first Game of Thrones episode, signed by the show’s cast and crew. Donors at all levels will be entered into a draw for a special prize, with the winner and a guest flown to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to accompany George on a helicopter ride and a tour of the wolf sanctuary.
“We can talk about dragons, direwolves, Games Of Thrones, Song of Ice and Fire, anything you want to talk about,’ he says in a video announcing his fundraising.
For the top tier, the $20,000 “Martyr”; level, George is offering two people — one male, one female — the chance to die a horrible death in an upcoming book by naming a character after the donor. “You can choose your character’s station in the world (lordling, knight, peasant, whore, lady, maester, septon, anything) and you will certainly meet a grisly death!”; he adds.
Meanwhile, what if every character on Game of Thrones was obsessed with social media, and everything that happened in Westeros was chronicled on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram?
It may sound bizarre, but that’s the premise behind a series of Facebook-style recaps of Game of Thrones that appear on the SomeEcards website, which offers a weekly recap of each GoT episode as seen from the various characters’ Facebook accounts, with tongue planted firmly in cheek.
Example: An event invitation reads, “George R.R. Martin and HBO have invited Millions of Viewers to the event Six Weeks of Nightmares.”;
You can check out this week’s recap right here, but be warned; much like Game of Thrones itself, some of what you’ll see is definitely NSFW.
