It may have seemed like a good idea to nab an interview with Michael Phelps at the airport when he, his fiance and their infant child returned from the Rio games in Brazil, but a local news reporter found out that was definitely not the case when the gold-medalist swimmer curtly shut down his interview attempt when he was attempting to exit Arizona’s Phoenix Sky Harbor airport.
“I’m not answering any questions, guys. If you could give me that space while I’m trying to get my family home and safe I would appreciate that,” Phelps told TV reporter Mark Liverman when he and a camera crew intercepted him at the airport.
Walking away from the reporter, Phelps added: “I appreciate you guys coming, but I’m trying to get my family home safe and that’s what matters the most. Thank you for understanding.” Watch:
