Bette Middler caught wind of the cancellation of “I Am Cait” and saw the opportunity to tweet a joke, not realizing the throwaway remark would create a furor in the Twitterverse.

“Now that @IAmCait has been cancelled,” wrote Midler in the since-deleted tweet, “will she go back to being Bruce?”

It didn’t take long for the 70-year-old singer to start taking heat on Twitter as she was roundly criticized for her “transphobic” joke, and Midler was quick to offer an apology.

While some accepted her apology, others continued to be critical and slammed the apology as well.
