She may be one of the richest people under the age of 30 in the U.K., but you wouldn’t be able to tell that by looking at Keira Knightley’s bank statements. As the actress reveals in the new issue of Glamour, her personal earnings for the year 2012 only totalled $50,000.

“I think living an [expensive] lifestyle means you can’t hang out with people who don’t live that lifestyle,”; Knightley, 29, says of her decision to cap her salary off at $50,000. “It alienates you. Some of my best most hilarious times have been in the least luxurious places.”;

In 2012, her company Kck Boo Ltd earned $2.5 million in film fees and commercial deals, but only 2 per cent of that figure found its way to Knightley’s personal bank account.

“I mean, if I want or need something that goes over that, I get it, but, yes, around that,”; Knightley says of the $50,000 figure.

Knightley, who can next be seen in Begin Again opposite Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine, also explains to Glamour why she decided to make a feel-good romantic comedy after several years of making feel-bad downers like Never Let Me Go, Atonement and Anna Karenina. “[W]ith a feel-good film you are always risking going way too cheesy…But maybe I can have a little holiday where I’m not playing a character who is being destroyed,” she says.

The new issue of Glamour hits newsstands June 17.
