In his first big project since departing hosting “Q” on the CBC, Shad takes on the world of hip-hop with a magnified look.

“Hip-hop is all over the world now, it’s global culture,” says the Canadian rapper.

His new docu-series “Hip-Hop Evolution”, led by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn,  is set to premiere on HBO Canada. It looks at the rise of the music genre since 1970s basement parties in the South Bronx of New York City. Shad acts as a narrative guide through the story.

“What’s going on socially and politically today,” says Shad, “the South Bronx was a tough neighbourhood, a lot of oppressed, disadvantaged people, and that of course has resonances today, we’re seeing it all over the news.” The four-part series will feature footage and interviews from the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa.

As Shad’s new series gets set to air on September 4, he looks back on his almost 16-month experience hosting “Q” with fond memories.

“An incredible, incredible experience,” he says.
