‘Grease’ Writer Debunks Fan Theory That Sandy Was Dead All Along

By Rachel West.

A new fan theory has surfaced on Reddit, speculating that Danny and Sandy were dead for the majority of the 1978 film, “Grease”.

According to the theory, the clues lie scattered throughout the film, most notably using the flying car as a metaphor for Sandy’s ascent to Heaven. The theory suggests that Sandy, played by Olivia Newton-John, enters into a coma and eventually dies on the beach after Danny (John Travolta) fails to save her from drowning.

The song “Summer Nights” explains that Danny failed to save Sandy on the beach with the line “Goodbye to Sandra Dee” referencing her death.

The theory goes on to state that the movie ends far too happily, as Rizzo ends up not pregnant after all with Kenicke realizing he truly loves her. Everything wraps up nicely, “just the way sweet Sandy would have wanted it be,” according to the Redditor, who adds: “The entire movie was a drowning woman’s coma fantasy.”

An alternate theory suggests that it may be Danny who died on the beach and the entire film is a a coma-vision of how he would have liked his life to play out: romance, dream car, high school graduation, and beating his rival.

However, Jim Jacobs, who wrote the original “Grease” book musical with Warren Casey, debunked the rumour in an interview with to TMZ, declaring that whoever came up with the notion of a comatose Sandy “must have been on acid.”

“Sandy was very much alive” throughout the entire movie, declares Jacobs. Case closed.
