Although Pacific Rim was initially regarded as a box office disappointment when it hit North American theatres last year, the movie proved to be far more successful overseas, particularly in China, where it made $115 million, outgrossing the likes of Fast & Furious 6, Skyfall, Man of Steel, and Gravity. The film went on to gross $411 million worldwide – not great for a $190 million production, but enough for it to be considered profitable.

In light of the film’s success overseas, Legendary Pictures and Universal have greenlit a sequel which will hit theatres April 7, 2017.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro made the news official in the below YouTube video. “We’re going to develop a new animated series for Pacific Rim, continue the comic-book series that we started with Year Zero, and most importantly, create a sequel for the film,”; he says in the video. “I’m working on this with Zak Penn and Travis Beacham, and we are very happy to be bringing you more Kaijus, more Jaegers, kicking each other’s butt.”
