Nina Dobrev and her Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder may no longer be a romantic item, but if there’s any ill will between the pair, neither seems to show it. “She always lets me have the last fry,” Somerhalder says of his ex in the new issue of NYLON.
But Somerhalder is hardly unique in receiving that particular deep-fried gift. For Dobrev, giving away the last fry is something she tries to do for everyone regardless of how they fit into her romantic history. “I don’t like any kind of negativity. I try to be good to everyone, whether it’s a love, a friend, an ex,”; she says.
During her downtime from Vampire Diaries, Dobrev appeared in the upcoming Let’s Be Cops, her comedy debut. And according to the 25-year-old Canadian-born actress, acting in a comedy is far more frightening than acting in a vampire-themed TV show. “It’s terrifying. I can get to an emotional place and start crying, but there’s pressure when you think you have to be funny,”; she says. “You really have to be uninhibited and fearless.” (Damon Wayans, Dobrev’s Let’s Be Cops co-star, assures NYLON that Dobrev exhibits both of those qualities. “She really knows how to play a scene – and she’s down to do anything for a laugh,” he says).
After first making an impression in small supporting roles in Away From Her, Chloe, and Degrassi: The Next Generation, Dobrev suddenly catapulted to a new level of fame when The Vampire Diaries debuted in 2009. That show has been running strong for five seasons now (the sixth season is scheduled to debut in the fall), but Dobrev still has a hard time adjusting to the fact that her face and name are well known. “I really do forget,” says Dobrev of being famous. “People feel like they know you when you’re in their living room, weekly, for five years. But I always get uncomfortable when people know more about me than I know about them.”
The new issue of NYLON hits newsstands July 30.
