Canadian teen singing sensation Shawn Mendes says his journey from being a star on Vine to being courted by major labels has been “absolutely insane.”;
The 15-year-old Pickering native opens up about his unique rise as a hot music commodity in a newly posted profile piece in Billboard. The young star revealed to the music mag that he spoke with a variety of high-profile labels before signing a deal with Island Records.
“Island Records was the first record label to … acknowledge me,”; shared Mendes. “After that, quickly Republic Records, and then Atlantic Records, Sony Records and Warner Bros. It was all the labels at once. It was absolutely insane like knowing that this many record labels were interested in me.“
Mendes, who scored a #24 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 a few weeks back, is changing the way some in the music industry go about finding hot new talent.
“I never really looked at Vine as a resource to find talent,“; admits Island A&R rep Ziggy Chareton in the piece. He ended up coming across the young singer after receiving a clip from Mendes’s manager Andrew Gertler. Gertler says he’s been encouraged by the success Mendes has experienced with his own output outside of the world of Vine.
“We knew the social following was there, but he had never sold a song before,”; said Gertler. “Coming to New York and seeing that girls were showing up to his hotel and seeing that these numbers online were translating to physical people was when we were kind of like, “OK, this is getting serious.'”;
A four-song self-titled EP from Shawn Mendes is set for release next week.
