Neil Young hosted his 30th annual Bridge School Benefit on Saturday, joined by such performers as Roger Waters, Willie Nelson, My Morning Jacket, Cage the Elephant, Dave Matthews, Nils Lofgren, Nora Jones and Metallica.

In fact, one of the evening’s highlights came when Metallica joined Young for a cover of his Buffalo Springfield hit “Mr. Soul”, with Young and Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett trading licks in a guitar-solo showdown.

As Rolling Stone points out, Metallica served up some surprises during the band’s set, including playing “Hero of the Day” for the first time since 1999. In addition, they also debuted acoustic versions of “Whiskey in a Jar,” “Seek & Destroy” “Bleeding Me” and new album track “Hardwired”, as well as a cover of The Clash’s “Clampdown”. Watch:
