“The Walking Dead” is regularly a ratings champion, but Sunday night’s season-seven premiere managed to make a huge impact on social media as well, breaking records to become 2016’s most tweeted-about TV episode.

The premiere — in which not one but two beloved characters bought the farm courtesy of new villain Negan — topped Twitter as fans took to social media to express their horror, with the tweeting peaking at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET, following the murder of the second character (as reported by Mashable).

On a global basis, more than 4.6 million tweets referenced the ultra-gory season premiere, propelling the episode to Twitter’s #1.

Of course, fan-tweeting about “The Walking Dead” is nothing new; the series already holds the distinction of being the most tweeted-about TV series of the 2015-’16 season in the U.S., averaging 435,000 tweets per episode.
