Do Ian Somerhalder and wife Nikki Reed plan to have children? You bet they do, and “The Vampire Diaries” star opens up in a new interview with Angeleno magazine about the couple’s plans to start a family.
“Oh, I will one day have amazing children with my beautiful wife,” says Somehalder, who married Reed last year. “Absolutely, definitely. I live with someone who strives to find happiness and peace in the smallest things — whether it’s sitting for five minutes under a tree or getting out into the country and spending time on our horses or even just going for a walk around the lake or riding a boat. I am so blessed that I did, indeed, find this human being that can deal with me and is also the most caring, compassionate person I’ve ever known. That’s why I wake up happy.”
Another thing that makes him happy is working to protect the environment, and Somerhalder explains that his enviro-consciousness began at a young age.
“I grew up pretty impoverished in the Southeast, in a very delicate ecosystem on a lake that borders New Orleans,” he says. “There had to be a balance between nature and human. My father always taught me to find that balance. You have to give back what you take.”
This philosophy is what led the actor to launch the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which he says was his response to the BP oil spill that ravaged the Louisiana coastline in 2010, revealing the foundation was “born out of the feeling of helplessness watching our government step aside and let a company lie, cheat and steal. I watched my backyard destroyed.”
His hope for the foundation is that it will help imbue the same desire to preserve the environment in future generations. “You change the world through the education of its youth,” he says. “The greatest, untapped natural resource in the world are kids. It’s all about knowledge.”
