The fashion industry can be quite picky, but Gigi Hadid had the flair to work it to her advantage.
Tommy Hilfiger revealed to Yahoo Style how Hadid wore a poncho at his fall 2015 fashion show because some designers weren’t satisfied with her figure: “Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because, you know, she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin.'”
The wildly popular 21-year-old supermodel didn’t let that stop her, Hilfiger explained: “So they put a red, white and blue poncho on her. It covered a lot of her body, unfortunately, but it received millions of hits.”
Hadid’s success led the famed fashion designer to pitch a partnership between the two, “So I said, you know, why don’t we ask her to design a line with us – ‘Gigi, come design this with me, we’ll do a Gigi x Tommy couture line.'”
Hilfiger has since addressed his controversial comments in a statement released to People magazine. “Gigi is truly the definition of a ‘Tommy Girl’ – her magnetic personality is bright, confident and always optimistic. I’ve known her for many years, and am extremely proud to have her as the ambassador of my brand and as a collaborator of our collections,” he said. “Any statement to the contrary is completely false. The headline from the interview with Yahoo! was misleading and has since been corrected.”
In an age of body-image issues and awareness, it is important to remember that even a world-renowned supermodel like Gigi Hadid has been told she wasn’t thin enough – and rocked the show despite it.
